TV Thinky Thoughts: Minority Report Edition

It’s one of my favorite times of year – Fall TV Premiere season.  After a summer full of Ballers, MasterChef, and many shows with tiny houses, I am ready for meaty narratives. I have a lot of TV boxes that need to be checked. Minority Report is checking the Sci-Fi procedure and the Cop show box.

I don’t particularly like cop shows. Barring Brooklyn Nine-Nine, I don’t really want to watch cops solve cases because it comes too rote for me. That being said, I will watch a sci-fi cop show. I watched Minority Report and I felt that it was smart. They didn’t try to copy the movie note by note but wove it into the pilot with ease. They took inspiration but made it their own, which is the whole point of an adaptation in my opinion.

Yet I have been burned many times by Fox:

  • Firefly
  • Dollhouse
  • Sleepy Hollow
  • Almost Human

Those last two have come out in the past two years. I can’t keep investing my energy into a Fox sci-fi show and then it gets canceled or worse, becomes convoluted and unrecognizable(Sleepy Hollow, I’m looking at you).  I want to give Minority Report a honest try but you know the song “Once bitten and twice shy.”

I liked the show a lot. Meagan Good was a grizzly cop out to save lives and Stark Sands makes Dash believably naive and childlike. Also the twist at the end of the pilot involving Dash’s siblings show me that made me realize that the writers are obviously thinking beyond solving future murders.

I’ll be back next week and probably throughout the first season. Let’s just hope it doesn’t turn into something I’ve seen before.
